Bedsores affect older patients at a disproportional rate, especially those who are immobile or have a disability that requires assistance for mobility. In some cases, the elderly patient will sustain a pressure sore from their weight, commonly on a pressure point of contact. The severity of the pressure sore can range from stage one to four. Any bedsore found on a patient in a nursing home or assisted living facility warrants immediate attention from a medical professional.
While bedsores need a substantial amount of time to develop from immobility, it is possible for a before to develop as quickly as within two hours. Multiple medical research universities have noted that elderly populations in these facilities are the highest at-risk-cohort for complications due to bedsores.
