Central Virginia Takes Time Out to Honor Veterans

Today, in honor of Veteran’s Day, various organizations, groups and businesses in Central Virginia are taking time to honor our veterans and current servicemen and women.

-Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg will be devoting eight hours to reading the names of the more than 6,200 casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan during the past decade.

-The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will host an 11 a.m. ceremony that includes Junior ROTC students from around the region.

– The American Red Cross, Exchange Club of Lynchburg, Associated Contactors of VA and local veterans have joined to host a blood drive at the Lynchburg City Armory. The event, called “Bleed for Our Country,” is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and free food and t-shirts will be given to all donors. For each blood donation, organizers will donate $10 to an annual all-expense trip for 80 to 100 local veterans to view the nation’s war memorials in Washington D.C.

Additionally, Food Lion stores are giving 10 percent discounts to all active and retired military personnel in honor of the holiday, the company has announced. For more info on the above events and a full listing of events, read the story.
