College Students Move into Assisted Living Facility

After years of positive interactions with volunteers from Winona State University, a Minnesota nursing home decided to take it a step further. In 2019, the Senior Living at Watkins invited six college students to live alongside senior residents in the manor. Students were selected through an application process with their room and utilities paid for. In exchange for their room and board, the students are required to volunteer at least ten hours each month at the assisted living facility.

“They're like sunshine to us, even when the sun's not shining,” says resident Neumann, who at 78 has recently learned crocheting from one of the college students.
