Family Opens Dementia Care Facility After Finding No Better Alternative

The family of a loved one diagnosed with early onset dementia has advocated along with their loved one to open up a new type of facility to meet the needs of dementia patients in an innovative way. The facility will look more like a normal home dwelling, rather than an institution, housing only 36 residents at a time. Treatment will include occupational therapy and cognitive programming.

“We’ve seen lots of different stories play out,” said the dementia patient's wife. “None of them were the story we wanted.” She plans to live with him at the facility they planned and opened together. She says it will just be a matter of time, but in the meantime, she has cared for him at home, planning a trip to Costa Rica to continue living life as much as they can for as long as they can.
