Heroin Use On The Rise In Elderly

Heroin usage is on the rise with the elderly, as increasing reports are coming to substance abuse centers. One particular nursing home patient was offered heroin by a relative of another patient in the facility. The patient was found on the floor, bleeding from her nose. She told the nursing home staff she had been told to “try a little”.

”Anybody in their 60s either just recently started using or they got out of prison and started using, because you’re not going to make it to 60 if you’ve been using heroin since you were 30 or since you were 20,” said a clinical services technician of a treatment center. “It’s just not going to happen.” Nursing home administration and staff should be aware of the possibilities of increased use of heroin.
