Hospital Patient Dies Due To Preventable Pressure Ulcers

An 86-year-old male hospital patient admitted for a period of 8 weeks after suffering a fall died due to pressure ulcers. The patient was allowed to suffer the bed sores when he was nearly immobile for 8 weeks waiting for a bed to open at a longer care facility.  The coroner blamed the hospital for failing to prevent pressure ulcers that were preventable.

The man ultimately died from organ failure due to sepsis. An expert reviewing the case has the opinion thay the patient “died from a direct consequence of his pressure area, this was almost certainly a preventable death,” said the coroner. For more, read the story.
