Instances of Abuse and Neglect Causes Government Agency to Recoup Millions of Dollars from Nursing Homes

For the 2018 government fiscal year, the Office of the Inspector General from Department of Health and Human Services is recovering $48.7 million previously distributed to nursing homes. Out of this collected money, a portion was returned because of civil and criminal court cases involving nursing home abuse and neglect. $68,168 was reverted due to criminal convictions of employees and $1.3 million was calculated from lawsuit settlements, totaling $1.5 million.

The figures do show to have declined from previous years. However, according to the government agency collecting the funds, “many of the fluctuations over time could simply be coincidental.” For more, read the story.
