The deaths of six residents of an assisted living home in 2009 has prompted state health officials to create stricter guidelines for such facilities. The six residents died after being infected with hepatitis through needles used in diabetes treatments.
In order to ensure better overall care in such facilities, a new law provides for more training for employees in assisted living facilities. All employees who assist residents with medications will receive training in infection control by the end of next year. The state has accommodated for the cost of the training by working it into pre-existing training courses. Assisted living facilities will have no additional costs. For more, read the story.
