Lynchburg Church Honors Local Purple Heart Recipients for Veterans Day

A local church celebrated Veterans Day by honoring five purple heart recipients with ties to central Virginia. Court Street United Methodist Church dedicated its Sunday service to remind the community that freedom is not free. The congregation honored four men wounded in the line of duty as well as Staff Sergeant Greg Copes who lost his life serving our country.

“The outpouring of love and support from the community is tremendous and really helps make it through the hard times,” said Earl Copes, brother of Staff Sergeant Copes. This is the first Veterans Day since losing his brother.

Sergeant Jonathon Roberts, was also honored after an explosion during his second deployment to Iraq left him with a traumatic brain injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and near complete hearing loss in one ear. In addition to honoring the soldiers and their families, the church raised over $5,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project. For more, read the story.
