A new sock invented as a fall-management system drastically reduced patient falls during an eight-month test in a small acute care hospital, according to the inventing company's press release.
The “PUP” (or Patient is Up) smart sock is made of “woven fabric that enables real-time monitoring of patients to disourage falls and enhance therapy and rehabilitation.”
During the study, the control group which did not wear the sock had about a dozen falls, while those using the PUP smart sock had zero falls.
“We are encouraged that the results of the study underscored our belief that PUP is a superior approach to reducing patient falls among high-risk patients, improving patient safety, reducing costs associated with falls and related injuries, and enhancing the overall hospital experience for patients, their families and caregivers,” the Palarum CEO said.
