This past week, the U.S. Justice Department expanded an inquiry that examined if New York undercounted coronavirus deaths among nursing home residents. New York, unlike most states, only counts “residents who died on a nursing home’s property and not those who died after being taken to a hospital.” This lead to misleading numbers regarding the state’s coronavirus death count.
It is suspected that New York has undercounted nursing home deaths “by thousands.” Currently, the state health department is taking time to double-check figures for accuracy. In addition to New York, New Jersey is also being questioned regarding its nursing home death count.
