A social media post about a woman's 89-year-old grandfather who was ‘badly’ in need of attention when she visited him has gone viral and was shared nearly 20,000 times. The family said that the man was aspirating with food piled up in his brace, fruit punch spilled across the bed sheets and trash everywhere. Police are investigating the death of an 83-year-old woman at a nursing home from a head injury. A staff member heard what sounded like a body hitting the floor in the facility’s locked dementia unit, and found a 78-year-old man standing over the woman. The woman suffered a skull fracture and brain injury and died.

The opioid epidemic is affecting many, even those supposedly protected in nursing homes. A 24-year-old maintenance worker with a severe opioid addiction began stealing patients’ jewelry to support his habit. He recently was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for stealing $10,000 worth of jewelry.

The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services fined a nursing home $140,000 following the fatal fall of an 87-year-old patient. A nurse failed to report the man's fall or follow procedures which family members believe would have prevented his death.In determining the amount of the fine, CMS considered the facility's checkered history of repeated deficiencies.
