New nursing home quality rating measurements have been released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The new measurements will include data reported by hospitals. Originally the measurements were based fully on self-reported data.
Nursing Home Counselor Abuses Patients, Indicted
A nursing home counselor has been indicted and fired after using his status as a caregiver to abuse patients he counseled. The counselor was working with victims of brain trauma and accessed their rooms, and then performed forced sexual acts. The counselor faces 33 counts of indictment, including sexual assault, sexual abuse, and criminal sexual act. “Sexual assault of [the state’s] impaired residents is beyond reprehensible – it’s inconceivable,” said the attorney general.
Nursing Home Patient Catches On Fire While Smoking
A nursing home patient covered in flames was observed by a passerby who called 911. The flaming patient was smoking outside a nursing home facility with another patient. The patients were unable to control or put out the flames on the patient's shirt and pants.
Patient’s C.Diff Not Timely Tested or Treated; Nursing Home Settles
On May 6, 2011 a 77-year-old female nursing home patient developed diarrhea and was diagnosed with C. diff. However, the patient was not tested or treated properly by nursing home staff.
Nursing Home Patient Returns After Wandering
A nursing home patient wandered from a nursing home and was reported missing. The patient left on foot from the facility where he resided. However, police reported that he had returned and was no longer in danger. “He is safe and will no longer be listed as a missing person,” the police sergeant said.
Nursing Home Receives $200,000 Fine For Citations Of Immediate Jeopardy
A nursing home received hefty fines and a blistering report after allowing multiple incidents in the facility that went unreported. The patients remaining in the facility were deemed in “immediate jeopardy”. The state fined the nursing home $200,000 and closed all federal aid as part of the repercussions of the incident report. One patient was allowed to die after not being resuscitated.
