Nursing homes may be experiencing some changes due to new requirements from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Proposals are underway for changes that involve patient’s rights staying in nursing home facilities. One of the proposed changes involves visiting hours.

A nursing home facility is being evasive about patients suffering from scabies. The infestation has been kept quiet, despite the health department calling to check on the issue. Spokespersons for the facility state that the test results have not all returned from the five patients believed to be questionable for having scabies.

A nursing home cited for deficiencies was recently noted for having an incident with a patient’s peg tube. The peg tube was discovered to have “worm like bugs found crawling all around the PEG tube and surrounding tissue.” The citation determined the peg tubes were not changed often enough and maggots were found crawling around it.  The incident was among 31 other deficiencies identified in a survey of the nursing home. A family member has sued a nursing home for responsibility with his father’s death. The patient was admitted with Parkinson’s, diabetes, and other health issues. During his stay, he was allowed to suffer multiple pressure ulcers, one at the Stage III level.
