Many times nursing home residents are not only hurt physically, but emotionally, too. Financial abuse seems to be playing a huge role in damaging the morale of the elderly. In various ways the elderly are experiencing theft and according to a survey by CPA financial planners, it hurts them emotionally far more than financially.

A resident being treated for dementia and high blood pressure recently died due to what doctors believe was an overdose of narcotics. This case is being investigated because when the resident died doctors told family that when a drug screening was done they found narcotics. The family was aware that the resident was never prescribed those types of drugs.

A woman is being sent to federal prison for 25 months as well as a man who has been sentenced for 8 years. Both individuals were convicted for the same reason as they recently worked for the Department of Public Health and non-profit groups run with state-granted money. They pleaded guilty to federal charges including bribery, theft, and tax evasion.  Together they stole millions of dollars by providing kickbacks for services directed to family firms.

Families of the elderly who live in nursing homes strive to find the best place possible for their loved one. Though after conducting research on all available facilities, mistakes can still be made. The reason is that on a certain site available to show families the ranking of nursing homes, there has been inaccurate information.

In one county the local government is responsible for inspecting health facilities versus the other counties that have the state handle health facilities’ licenses and investigating the complaints issued against the facilities.
