A nursing home caregiver was sentenced to 10 years of suspended time for abusing an elderly woman. The family videoed their loved one’s care and caught her caregiver verbally abusing, covering the patient’s mouth and pouring water down her feeding tube. The caregiver showed little remorse, telling the judge she was happy she was caught.

A nursing home owner was charged with 11 counts of obtaining property by false pretense, three counts of financial card theft, three counts of trafficking opiates by delivery, two counts of conspiracy, ad one count each of obtaining controlled substance by fraud, trafficking opium or heroin by possession and trafficking opiates by sale. A nursing home administrator was charged with financial exploitation on four counts. The administrator purchased recliners with resident’s trust fund money to be used for the patient’s personal expenses. The purchase amounted to $1,691.69.

A 60 year-old patient was receiving home health care at her apartment. An aide with the home health company placed the patient in the bathtub without first checking the temperature of the bath water, which was scalding hot. The aide then left the patient in the bath while she watched TV.

A 55 year-old patient had mild mental retardation and was unable to care for herself. While in the care of a home health provider, home health staff permitted the patient to develop severe pressure ulcers on her sacrum, hips, and heels. When the patient was examined at the hospital, she was noted to have a large sacral decubitus, pressure ulcers on her hips bilaterally, and pressure ulcers on her heels.

A nursing home bookkeeper has been convicted of stealing funds from patients’ trust funds. An audit of the trust funds revealed the bookkeeper had embezzled over $4,000 from the elderly residents. Discrepancies in the various accounts had lent to the possibility of theft.
