A former director of nursing for a nursing home is charged with larceny over the amount of $250.  She used a nursing home resident’s bank account to purchase personal items while on staff at the home.  She was not able to account for the purchases pertaining to any of the resident’s needs. The purchases ranged from a laptop to cat food and cat litter. She also made cash withdrawals in increments of $300-$400.

A non-profit company is collecting iPods as donations for nursing homes. The research suggests that music can relieve stress for patients with Alzheimers. A 2012 study revealed that 1 in 3 nursing homes was cited for violations over a 10 year study. In 2013 90 percent of nursing homes were cited for deficiencies by long-term care ombudsmen. This increases the necessity for selecting safe nursing homes for loved ones.

The aging population is growing in one county, requiring focus on space issues in the near future.  Thirteen percent of the population is over the age of 65.  In nearly fifteen years, nursing home residents have increased from 4,488 residents to more than 5,270. The local community is focusing on ways to house the elderly that will provide alternatives to nursing home facilities.

A nursing home employee has been charged with sexual assault of a disable nursing home resident. The man was arrested on site at the nursing home. The man is being held in jail on bond set at $250,000.

A nursing home and a bank are being sued together for selling stock to employees for an inflated, above-market value. Employees of a health company purchased stock to have company ownership and plan for retirement. The total stock price was $40 million and approved by a bank and the nursing home company.
