A nursing home facility is in jeopardy of closing due to a history of not meeting state requirements. The nursing home believes they are doing their best and patients come first, but Medicare says otherwise. They say there is “a history of persistent poor quality of care, as indicated by the findings of state or Federal inspection teams…”.

Federal policies are in question as news stories surface of theft in relation to nursing home trust funds. The number of resident theft victims is rising, and there may be a simple solution: background checks. Currently background checks are only required for direct caregivers, not for office staff.

A nursing home’s medication nursing assistant was indicted on charges for abusing a resident by selling her personal drugs and administering them to the resident. She was accused of giving Lorazepam to the resident. The resident’s doctor did not prescribe that particular drug.

A nursing home employee was recently arrested on sexual assault charges.  He was seen by another employee assaulting a 19 year old nursing home resident. The employee reported the crime to police immediately.

College students are making new habits of spreading cheer to the elderly.  Starting out as a program for students to volunteer at a local nursing home has opened the door to a new lifestyle.  Students are now spending extra time volunteering outside the program requirements.

Servicemen continue a two decade long tradition of eating a Thanksgiving meal with nursing home residents in Okinawa, Japan. The 7th Communication Battalion enjoys sharing with the community and sharing their U.S. culture with the residents.
