A woman concerned with neglect of the elderly says that she was dismissed by a manager that was “abrupt and unprofessional”.  A trial is underway and the jury has heard how one man and three women were said to be suffering pressure sores after a police raid in October 2011. The nurse testifying says the manager was not fully attentive to the residents. The nurse only worked at the home for 3 months, after raising concerns about the resident care.

A nursing home worker has been admitted to stealing $115,000 over the course of 2 years from a residents personal funds and the nursing home itself. The worker was let go due to performance issues and confessed to the theft her last week of work. Her job responsibilities included managing accounts of residents funded by family members for snacks and daily needs.

36% of nursing homes in one state are on a watch list for not meeting state standards. These facilities have one or more violations, including health and safety violations, financial mismanagement, neglect, and lack of staffing. Residents and their families have raised complaints leading officials to act.

A caregiver will spend one year in prison for hitting an 84-year-old man in the head. A local judge ruled it a second-degree assault and after sentencing the man to one year in prison, prohibited the man from serving as a caregiver for the elderly. One state is allowing family members to be proactive about nursing home abuse and neglect. Families are now permitted to install cameras in the room of their loved ones to ensure proper care. A nursing home administrator was fined $500 for hiding the knowledge of housing a convicted sex offender. The resident allegedly sexually assaulted a 95 year old resident as a child stood watching and crying, “No, no, no!” The sex offender had been convicted on four counts of sexual assault of children and had been transferred from the state Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offenders.
