Nursing Homes Fined for Serious Care Deficiencies Affecting Five Elderly Patients
Official reports in one state have revealed three nursing homes were recently fined by the Department of Public Health for serious care deficiencies at the facilities. The incidents involved five different residents who were seriously injured or affected by the poor care they received. One facility was cited for failing to provide sufficient care to a resident who refused proper treatment for so long that a wound on her leg was discovered to be infested with maggots.
Nursing Home Sued After Elderly Man Died of Head Injury As Result of Falls at the Facility
The family of a former nursing home resident has sued the facility after several falls at the facility caused the man’s death. According to the recently filed complaint, the resident suffered a minimum of four falls at the facility in roughly a two-week window. The resident died in September of last year after falls in late July and Early August.
Nursing Home Employee Withdraws $10,000 from Patient's Bank Account to Pay Her Own Bills
Police have arrested a nursing home employee charged with felony exploitation of a vulnerable adult and felony grant theft. The nursing home marketing director has admitted to stealing $10,000 from a dementia patient at the facility in order to pay her own bills. The arrest warrant reveals that the woman took the resident out to lunch and then to the resident’s bank, where she told the bank clerk that she needed a $10,000 cashier’s check from the man’s account.
Nursing Home Resident Choked to Death After Being Given the Wrong Meal
The Department of Public Health in one state has fined a nursing home $100,000 after an elderly resident choked to death on his breakfast. The penalty, issued when the life or welfare of a resident is in immediate jeopardy, is the most severe fine that can be issued against a state. According to the investigative report, a 61-year-old resident who was known to have food safety issues died after cramming two full pancakes and two sausage patties into his mouth at once.
