According to state documents, nursing home neglect is to blame for the death of a patient with severe cognitive impairments. The patient who choked to death last December suffered from dementia and a psychiatric disorder. The patient, who required all food be pureed, wandered through a gate to a nursing station and grabbed and ingested food that had been left on a lunch tray at the nurse’s station for several hours.

Two women have been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly beating an elderly nursing home resident earlier this month. Police responded to the nursing home after a disturbance call to find the suspects in the parking lot. The two suspects were arrested from the nursing home after they assaulted and attempted to forcibly remove the elderly resident from the facility.

The District Attorney involved in the case of a registered sex offender who groped a 91-year-old nursing home resident has not ruled out criminal charges against the facility. The former employee was a level 3 registered sex offender when he was hired at the home in 2008. The man was released on parole earlier in 2008 after serving 16 years for convicted rape.

According to police, an assisted-living facility director has been charged with criminal drug charges after she gave deceased residents’ medication to the surviving ones. The facility director was charged this week in district court with one count of production of a controlled substance and one count of distribution of a controlled substance, both felonies. A woman has been arrested on charges of mayhem and elder abuse after she bit an elderly woman. According to police, the 60-year-old suspect was a private caretaker to the elderly woman. The elderly victim was taken to a local hospital with a bleeding bite wound to her wrist.

County officials have determined an assisted living facility resident, whose body was found outside the facility last week, died of hypothermia. The 93-year-old female resident was found in the morning near a sidewalk outside of the facility where she lived. According to police, the resident was last seen inside the facility sometime Thursday.
