Following the death of a 90-year-old woman found outside a senior living center, the coroner has announced that the woman did not die from hypothermia. The elderly woman who suffered from dementia died last week at a hospital shortly after being located outside the facility in temperatures below freezing. According to police, the woman was last seen in the facility around 11:30 p.m.

Federal prosecutors have charged a woman with racketeering, murder, and hate-crimes in an indictment last week. The woman is accused of keeping mentally disabled adults locked in a basement so she could steal their benefits. The 52-year-old woman was charged along with four others.

An elderly nursing home patient diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and dementia was admitted to a nursing home for rehabilitation following a hip fracture in May 2008. On admission to the facility, the patient was noted to be a high fall risk. While at the facility, the patient was permitted to fall more than 10 times.

An assisted living facility has fired two of its employees after information regarding resident abuse was released recently by the Department of Health.  According to the investigative report, a resident who suffers from cognitive impairment was shoved into a recliner by an employee of the facility. The report recently released reveals that the facility failed to report changes in the patient’s condition and did not seek timely treatment after the resident’s fall. Another sad story regarding a violent outburst in a nursing home was reported this week. Police have reported that a 73-year-old male nursing home resident was charged with assault after beating to women at the facility with his cane. According to police, the elderly man struck a woman in the mouth with his cane after he accused her of stealing his money.
