Elderly Assisted Living Facility Resident Shot by Another Resident
Police have reported that an elderly woman was shot Friday night inside an assisted living facility. The suspect, a man in his 50’s who was also a resident at the facility, has been arrested. According to police, the elderly woman does not appear to have been the intended target.
Nursing Homes Cited For Widespread Overuse of Anti-Psychotics in Nursing Homes
Officials in one state have taken action against twenty-seven nursing homes for continued unnecessary use of anti-psychotics between 2009 and 2011. The citations did not come with fines, but inspection reports reveal that some residents remained on anti-psychotics for months, or even years, with no attempts by staff to reduce their dependance on the drugs. Additionally, some of the residents were so heavily medicated they were unable to speak, eat, or drink.
Nursing Home Employee Charged With Stealing Pain Patches From Elderly Residents
Police have arrested a woman accused of removing pain patches from elderly residents at the nursing home where she was employed. According to court records, the 20-year-old employee removed powerful, narcotic pain patches from a bed-bound, non-verbal resident and another patient in the dementia care unit. Police investigators were called to the facility after another employee noticed that the resident’s pain patch had been removed.
Criminal Nursing Home Resident Charged With Setting Fire to Facility, Displacing Residents
A criminal resident of an assisted living center has been charged with setting fire to the facility last week. The fire displaced 15 residents of the facility. This week, police charged a 50-year-old resident with first-degree arson, according to an arrest warrant. The facility is home to over 50 residents, however, most residents were able to return to their rooms after the incident.
Young Athletes Visit Elderly Nursing Home Residents to Sing Christmas Carols
Young athletes from baseball and softball teams recently visited elderly residents at nursing homes to sing them Christmas carols. Earlier this month, a nonprofit group launched the program for the softball and baseball teams. The program allowed the children to bring the gift of music to five different nursing homes.
Lawmakers Consider Mandatory Installation of Cameras in Nursing Home Rooms
Lawmakers in one state have begun looking into proposals to mandate cameras in resident rooms and common areas of nursing homes. Recent disturbing elder abuse caught on camera sparked the discussion of the legislation. Last month a hidden camera revealed horrible abuse of a 96-year-old woman.
