Caregivers Arrested For Neglect and Theft from Disabled Adults

State investigators have arrested two individuals on charges of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and misuse of federal funds. The state attorney general’s office announced this week that the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigators arrested the two on three counts each of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Nursing Home Sued After Woman Died From Infected Pressure Sores

The son of an elderly nursing home resident who died from a bacterial infection that resulted from bed sores has sued the facility. The woman was admitted to the facility in December 2009 with Parkinson’s disease related issues. Within ten days, the woman became unresponsive and was readmitted to the hospital.

Employees Evacuate Richmond Nursing Home After Fire Scare

Staff at a Richmond nursing home pulled the fire alarm and called 911 after employees smelled smoke at the facility. Facility employees evacuated over 150 residents in response to the smoke. Fire fighters arrived at the facility and determined that the smoke was caused by a faulty heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit.  Despite the absence of an actual fire, firefighters praised the quick action taken by the facility to protect the residents.

Resident of Virginia Nursing Home Pleaded Guilty to Sexual Abuse of Fellow Resident

A 70-year-old man pleaded guilty to sexual molestation of an elderly woman at a Staunton nursing home.  The man, a resident at Envoy of Staunton, will now spend a year in prison. The incident involving the man is just one recent instance of sexual abuse at the facility.  In October, two employees at the facility were charged with sexual crimes involving residents.  For more, read the story.
