State officials have fined a troubled nursing home $76,000 after health inspectors uncovered many serious care issues at the facility. The inspectors from the Department of Health found the deficiencies in early November during a facility inspection. Three care concerns put residents in “immediate jeopardy,” according to officials.

Elderly Nursing Home Woman Developes MRSA After Surgery to Remove Maggots from Ear

An elderly nursing home resident who recently was discovered to have 57 maggots in her ear has now developed a serious infection. The elderly woman who suffers from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease has developed MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant form of Staph infection. The woman’s husband has filed suit against the facility alleging that the maggots and subsequent infection are the result of neglect.

Nursing Home Employee Arrested for Abuse of 101-Year-Old Man

A man has been arrested in an alleged elder abuse case  after family members say a 101-year old man was abused physically and sexually.  The abuse, which took place at a nursing home, was caught on a hidden camera installed by the elderly resident’s family. The family had a private detective install the camera after the resident told them he was being abused. According to the attorney for the man’s family, the abuse was both sexual and physical.

Family Sues Hospital After Outbreak Related Death

The family of a man who died at one Veterans Affairs Hospital has sued the facility. The man, 87, died lat month from the Legionnaires’ disease that he contracted at the facility.  During the man’s hospitalization, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention was investigating a possible Legionnaires outbreak at the facility. Caregiver Arrested After Bilking $25,000 from Elderly Dementia Patient

Police have arrested a 30-year-old caregiver on charges that she bilked nearly $25,000 from an elderly dementia patient.  According to authorities, the woman was the personal caregiver for the 91-year-old man. During the time she served as his caregiver, she wrote herself fraudulent checks and used the man’s debit card for her personal purchases. The caregiver learned of the police investigation and fled the state.
