A woman charged this summer with abuse of a patient in a nursing home will have a preliminary hearing next month. The former nurse’s aide faces criminal charges for abuse of a patient and aggravated battery. According to court documents, two employees witnessed the woman verbally and physically abuse the 86-year-old patient over a six-month period.

According to the Daily Press, a Newport News Assisted Living Facility closed its doors this week after reports of ongoing care issues. Family Sues Nursing Home After Elderly Woman Required Surgery to Remove Maggots From Ear
The family of a 92-year-old elderly nursing home resident is suing the facility after doctors reportedly discovered maggots in the woman’s ear. The elderly woman is unable to speak or care for herself because she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The woman, who has an enlarged ear canal from a surgery years ago, was sent to a doctor for a “wax buildup” in her ear.
One Nursing Home Has Reported Over 50 Cases of Unidentified Gastrointestinal Illness
A nursing home reported this week that at least 50 residents and staff members at a the facility are sick with a gastrointestinal illness. County health officials say the first illness of a resident was reported a week ago. Since then, dozens of other residents and caregivers have become ill.
Family Sues Nursing Home After Resident Assault Led to Patient's Death
The family of an elderly woman who died following a violent attack by another resident at a nursing home has sued the facility for neglect. The woman died in 2009 shortly after another resident threw her to the floor while she was walking down the hall. The elderly dementia patient suffered a bruised eye and broken forearm.
Nurse Faces Criminal Charges After Resident Died of Neglect
A judge has decided that an elder abuse case against a former head nurse at a nursing home will advance to trial. According to investigators, the 77-year-old resident was supposed to have her bowel activity constantly monitored. Instead, she was not sufficiently monitored and died of fecal impaction in 2008 after 13 days at the facility.
