A senator from Connecticut has initiated measures to crack down on the over-prescription of antipsychotic drugs to elderly dementia patients. The senator has proposed legislation aimed at reducing the instances of “off-label” prescriptions for dementia patients in nursing homes. Off-label prescribing includes writing prescriptions for uses not approved by the FDA.
Police Investigate Fatal Resident-On-Resident Attack in Nursing Home
Police are investigating one nursing home after an 84-year-old resident has died after allegedly being bashed to death by another resident with a wooden door stop. The resident died three days after he was attacked at the facility last July. The attacker, bashed the resident with the doorstop while the victim was in bed.
Officials Suspend License of Virginia Nursing Home Administrator Due to Care Violations
Officials have suspended the license of a man who oversees six assisted living facilities in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Virginia Board of Long-Term Care Administrators suspended the administrator’s license in September after the death of a resident at one of the facilities. According to officials, the resident fell earlier this year and the center’s staff did not seek medical treatment outside the facility.
New Study Links Patient Mortality and Frequent Hospitalization to Bed Sores
A new clinical study through the UCLA School of Nursing has found a direct correlation between pressure ulcers (also known as pressure sores, decubitus ulcers, decubitus sores, and bed sores) and patient mortality and increased hospitalization.The study, funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, permitted researches to view data on over 50,000 Medicare patients. Male Visitor Charged with Sexual Assault of Female Nursing Home Resident
Police have arrested a man they said sexually assaulted a disabled woman at an area nursing home. The resident told staff that a man entered her room and molested her. Her roommate confirmed that a man entered the room and closed the curtain around the victim’s bed.
