Nursing home residents are taking refuge in hospitals in the wake of the Texas tornadoes earlier this week. One resident of the nursing home damaged by tornadoes said when the tornado was approaching, all the residents, even those in wheelchairs, went into the hallway and laid down. “Yes, we were all very scared,” She said.

Police are investigating one nursing home after a man died following a fall from a second-floor window at the facility Wednesday afternoon. According to authorities, the victim was a 45-year-old male resident of the facility. A representative from the district attorney’s office said that foul play has been ruled out, and the incident is under investigation.

A 63-year-old man and his wife have been convicted on charges of conspiring to defraud the Medicare and Medicaid programs by billing them for “worthless services” in the operation of three different nursing homes. The nursing home residents went without food and lived in horrible conditions, meanwhile the couple had purchased real estate and had plans on building a hotel using the money. The couple was convicted in United States District Court.

Two former employees of a nursing home are suing the owners of the facility, claiming they were fired for reporting abuse. The plaintiffs claim that after they reported physical and verbal abuse against patients by employees at the facility, they were fired. The attorney for the fired employees claims there is a history of the facility hiring workers who have records of abuse.

The investigation into the deaths of five nursing home residents in 48 hours has linked the deaths to an outbreak of Influenza. The deceased include a 74-year-old man and four women ages 81, 88, 90 and 91. All of whom died between last Sunday and Monday.

A nursing home has been the subject of two lawsuits regarding recent deaths at the facility. As causes of action, both complaints list negligence, violations of the health and safety code, and wrongful death. The first resident was admitted to to the nursing home after treatment for an infection and kidney disease in January 2011.
