Certified Nurse's Assistant Charged With Slapping 91-year-old Dementia Patient

A certified nursing assistant (CNA) working at a nursing home was arrested this weekend, after she allegedly slapped a 91-year-old patient with dementia. The woman is charged with abuse of the elderly which is a third-degree felony. According to arrest records,  the CNA was working at the nursing home when the incident occurred just before 6 p.m.

Jury In Favor Of Family After Nursing Home Choking Death

A jury has sided with the mother of a 56-year-old developmentally disabled woman who choked to death at a nursing home. The attorney for the victim’s mother said, the victim was blind and had difficulty swallowing. In February of 2009, bad weather had prevented all but one caregiver from arriving at the facility for work, The one was nurse was then left in charge of caring for six severely disabled residents.

Nursing Home Closed By State Officials After Failing to Provide Meals and Pay Bills

State officials have shut down an assisted living facility after it failed to adequately feed residents and was chronically late paying its bills. The facility, home to 23 residents, has relocated all residents, the home’s former administrator said. The facilities staff members where the ones who complained often to the State Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s office.

Hospice Company Investigated For Fraudulent Medicare Practices

A nation-wide hospice company is being investigated for fraud for allegedly cycling patients through nursing homes and hospice with a goal of making as much profit as possible from Medicare. Federal authorities have sued the hospice company, AseraCare, alleging it pressured its employees to enroll people into hospice who were not dying and resisted discharging them despite evidence they had more than six months left to live. All of which was done in order to maximize profits from Medicare.

Nursing Home Employees Fired After Reporting Nelgect at Facility

Three former employees of one nursing home have sued the facility and its parent company alleging they were fired for reporting patient abuse and neglect. The three, who were employed as certified nursing aides (CNA’s), were involved in a state investigation into the discovery of maggots in a patient’s genital area last summer, the lawsuit states. One was fired after filing a complaint after a patient’s suffered a fall.

Two Nurses Fired From Hospital Where They Placed Tape Over a Patient's Mouth

A hospital has fired two nurses after they allegedly taped a patient’s mouth shut and then laughed about it. A spokeswoman for the medical center says the nurses were fired last week and the incident has been reported to the state Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. The patient was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit on December 17 with nausea and anxiety from taking medication for chronic pain.
