A judge has ordered a former certified nursing assistant (CNA) to serve 15 months in jail in connection with allegations of patient abuse.  The former CNA, 36, worked at a nursing home in January 2010 when she was accused of physically, verbally and emotionally abusing elderly patients. A 22-year-old male certified nurse’s assistant at a nursing home has been charged with sexually assaulting a 93-year-old female resident, according to police. The victim reported the crime to police late last month, and the suspect was arrested Monday, police said. Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli spoke at the Nelson Center in Lovingston last week at a Senior Safety Day sponsored by the Nelson County TRIAD. Cuccinelli focused his keynote speech mainly on health insurance fraud and elder abuse against Virginia seniors. TRIAD is a cooperative effort among law enforcement agencies, senior residents and senior citizen organizations that is geared toward reducing crimes against seniors.

A Circuit Court jury ruled in favor of an 80-year-old woman who fell and was found severely injured in an equipment storage room at the nursing home where she was living. In January of 2009, the woman went missing while moving up and down the hall with her walker. When she was found in the equipment room, she had broken bones in her face, there was bleeding in her brain, a 4-centimeter cut on her forehead, a cut on her lip and a swollen eye, according to state documents.

An assisted living resident was found dead early Friday morning below a bridge. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the 61-year-old man, had reportedly left the facility between 1-2 a.m. According to police, the resident had been documented as having medical and mental challenges and was placed in the facility by his guardian.
