Registered Nurse Fined $10,000 After Elderly Man Died with More than Eleven Bed Sores
A registered nurse(RN) who was case manager for an 86-year-old man staying in an adult care home was ordered to pay a $10,000 on Friday in a case involving “severe neglect” of the patient. The 58-year-old registered nurse was also placed on five years’ probation as part of his sentence. The man pleaded no contest to second-degree assault to charges that he recklessly caused injury to the patient by failing to perform his legal duty from July to October 2007.
Nursing Home License Suspended After Allegations of Theft and Abuse
State officials have shut down an assisted-living center after charges that its elderly residents were physical abused and their money stolen from them. Residents of the facility were removed and placed in other facilities last week after the state Bureau of Health Care and Compliance suspended the license of the nursing home. The investigation uncovered cases in which Social Security checks and other funds allegedly were found being deposited into the personal accounts of caregivers.
Nursing Home Cited for Deficeincies: Failure to Administer Medication, Fall From Lift
The state Department of Public Health has cited and fined one nursing home for failing to properly administer medication to one resident and for improperly transferring another resident into bed, causing that resident to suffer a hemorrhage from a fall. The facility faces a $710 fine after the care issues were revealed in an August inspection. New York City Evacuates Nursing Homes and Hospitals Before Storm Hits
Hundreds of thousands were told Thursday to prepare to be evacuated as New York City braced for its first hurricane in decades. Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered all nursing homes and hospitals in low-lying areas evacuated beginning Friday. “For the general public, it’s a good idea to move Friday,” Bloomberg said.
Nursing Home Employees Sent to Jail After Prank
Two former nursing assistants at a skilled nursing facility have been found guilty of elder abuse and sentenced to 20 days in jail and two years probation. The two employees were considered the in charge of slathering seven elderly dementia patients with a slippery ointment in November 2009. Four other workers were fired by the facility and criminal charges were brought against three of them.
Former Nursing Home Resident Sues Facility for Keeping Her Drugged Up for Months
One nursing facility has been accused of wrongly drugging a 68-year-old patient for months in order to take over her Social Security payments. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Superior court claims that the facility failed to care for the elderly woman properly and kept her doped her up with medications for schizophrenia, dementia. The woman says she was also allegedly given powerful psychotropic drugs, including Ativan, without warning, a psychiatric evaluation, or a prescription.
