Nursing Home Sued For Defrauding Medicare and Medicaid

Federal prosecutors have filed a lawsuit accusing a nursing home of providing “services that were worthless” and that resulted in the death of five residents.The prosecutors seek reimbursement of Medicare and Medicaid funding from the 140-bed facility. The lawsuit alleges that the nursing home defrauded Medicare and Medicaid by submitting bills for reimbursement for poor resident care. The nursing home could face stiff fines if convicted.

Study Finds Link To Nursing Home Falls and Antidepressants

According to a recent study by the Institute for Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife (an affiliate of Harvard Medical School), nursing home residents taking certain antidepressant medications are at an increased risk of falling in the days following the start of a new prescription or a dose increase of their current drug.  The study found that nursing home residents are five times more likely to fall within two days of a new prescription for or an increased dose of a some antidepressants. Autopsy Revealed That Nursing Home Resident's Death Was Due To Assault

Autopsy results have revealed that an 86-year-old nursing home resident’s death was caused by brain injuries due to an assault, according to officials.  The elderly woman who died Thursday in the hospital was said to have fallen at the nursing home, but an autopsy revealed her injuries were likely due to an assault not a fall, according to the medical examiner’s office. The facility administrator commented that they had not yet been contacted by Police regarding the resident’s death.  …
