In January 2010, a resident at a nursing home did not receive her newly prescribed medication, an error the state claims lead to her death. The findings by the state Health Department, released this week, determined that the facility provided “inadequate medication administration.” According to the investigation report, the woman entered the nursing home on Jan. 14, 2010, with diagnoses of congestive heart failure and low potassium.

Hidden Camera Captures Neglect and Abuse in Long Term Care Facility
The family of a patient in a long term care facility is accusing the facility of negligence caught on camera. The man moved into the long term care facility last year because he was suffering from dementia and Parkinson’s disease severe enough that his wife could no longer care for him at home. Within three months the man suffered three falls, and was frequently found with bumps and bruises on his body.
Nursing Home Employee Admits to Stealing Over $60,000 from Residents
A nursing home employee confessed this week to stealing nearly $63,000 from two elderly residents at the facility to help pay for her daughter’s college tuition. The 43-year-old woman pleaded guilty in District Court to four felony counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The nursing home employee could face up to a year in jail and be required to pay full restitution.
Nursing Home Faces Charges of Neglect After Patient Committs Suicide
A nursing home and its former administrator are being blamed in an indictment for the death of a suicidal patient at their facility. The Attorney General on the case said yesterday that facility is facing abuse and neglect charges in connection with the man’s suicide. According to the Attorney General, the 34-year-old patient was admitted to the facility despite its lack of equipment or staff trained to handle patients with mental illness.
Federal Grant Allows Expansion of Background Checks on Employees Caring for the Elderly
One state is considering whether employees of nursing homes should have to pass a federal background checks before being employed. The state has been given $3 million federal grant that will pay for the new program, which will begin as a voluntary measure. Currently, nursing homes may require the checks, but state law does not mandate them.
