Study Shows Pill Splitting May Put Nursing Home Residents at Risk

Splitting pills, which is commonly done by patients and health care workers to save money or make medications easier to swallow,  is potentially dangerous, a new study suggests. Belgian researchers found that nearly one-third of split pill fragments deviated from recommended dosages by at least 15%. In the study, five volunteers divided eight tablets of various sizes using three tools: a kitchen knife, scissors and a pill-splitting device.

Home Health Aide Charged with Abusing Elderly Dementia Patient

A woman who abused an elderly patient was sentenced to probation this week. The 53-year-old woman was convicted of endangering the welfare of an incompetent person after a jury trial that ended in November. She had faced up to a year in jail, but on Wednesday she was sentenced in criminal court to three years of probation and five days of community service.

Nursing Home Employee Admits to Tormenting Patient

A nursing home employee has been accused of tormenting a patient after several incidents recorded on a cell phone were turned over to police. Sheriff’s deputies arrested the 32-year-old nursing home employee Wednesday on four counts of cruelty to the infirm. According to police reports, deputies received a complaint from a the nursing home where the abuse occurred.
