Police Continue to Question Staunton Man's Death

Police are still questioning the death of 85-year-old Russell Beach almost seven months ago at his caregivers residence.On May 27, Beach was hospitalized for a hip fracture, injuries to his face and elbow and a burned foot. The mans caregiver said that the man fell when trying to stand up on his own. The next day, a doctor noted his “expected death” would be the result of malnutrition and neglect, according to court records.

Elderly Women Die in House Fire Despite State Warnings to Relocate

A 76-year-old woman and her 56-year-old daughter, were killed when their home caught on fire earlier this month. Investigators say the fire was caused by a space heater being too close to combustible materials. The two residents had remained in the home even though it was cited for numerous code violations.

Nursing Home Evacuated After Water Pipe Burst

Eighty residents were evacuated from an assisted nursing facility last Thursday morning due to a broken sprinkler head. Firefighters were called to the complex at around 10 a.m. A fire department official at the scene said a broken sprinkler head caused flooding and ceiling tiles to collapse inside the three-story facility.

Nursing Home Fined For Failing to Check Patients for Bedsores

The federal government has fined one nursing home $4,615 for providing substandard quality of care to its residents. The facility was one of 15 nursing homes in the same state to be sanctioned by the federal government between June and September, according to a report by the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group. The most serious of the facility’s problems was the failure to provide five residents with care needed to prevent and treat bed sores.

Nursing Home Cited For Allowing Residents To Smoke While Hooked up to Oxygen Machines

A nursing home was fined this year for not preventing residents from smoking in their rooms around oxygen devices, jeopardizing safety.  The Nursing & Rehabilitation Center was fined $3,250 by the Department of Health & Human Services after it was discovered that three residents were known by staff to smoke cigarettes in their rooms with oxygen devices present.
