Hurricane plans are underway, however, many nursing home facilities still have not established their backup power should they lose power from the storm. New rules were created in the wake of a previous hurricane, where patients died after the power went out. Nearly half of the facilities due to implement the new emergency plan for backup power have yet to do so.Many have requested extensions and have been granted them.

A nursing home has hired a consultant to address problems the facility has in providing care. The terms and cost have not yet been publicized per a spokesman for the facility. The consultant will manage the facility for a period of time to be decided by both parties as the agreement is still underway.

A local animal shelter has made a big impact on one of its nursing homes in the community. The shelter joined with the nursing home to create volunteer opportunities for nursing home patients to spend time with the animals caring for them and making blankets as needed. The family of a nursing home patient has filed a lawsuit after finding their mother was neglected in the midst of falsified documents stating she received care when she did not. The patient was rushed to the hospital at her daughter's urging when she noticed her mother was not well. Upon arrival at the hospital, she was identified to be in septic shock, organ failure, and dehydrated. Her family says they put faith in the system, but will never make that mistake again.
