A nursing home has been cited and fined for failure to maintain the standard of care for patients in its facility due to a shortage of staffing. Patients in the facility were not fed, toileted, or bathed. A nursing home fire broke out when a resident’s bed caught on fire. The bed was close to an air conditioning unit and the coils sparked a fire. The resident was taken from the bed along with other residents who were evacuated. Some patients were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Three nursing home employees were charged with exploitation of an elderly person after posting a Snap chat video while a patient lay dying in her bed after having a stroke. The nurses were to monitor the patient while waiting for a hospice nurse. Instead they posted a video of the patient while smoking a vape pen and cursing at the camera.
