Video Cameras Made Available To Family Members Of Patients

State officials are offering cameras to families of nursing patients in order to record care they receive.  Family members are allowed to have the video cameras for 30 days to secretly record caregivers caring for their loved ones.  The recordings can then be handed to the attorney eneral's office to prosecute against any neglect or abuse. The cameras must not have audio in order to avoid violating wiretap laws.

Nursing Homes And Assisted Living Fail To Meet New Standards

Hundreds of nursing home facilities and assisted living facilities have failed to meet standards to have backup generator power sources installed. The new standard was put into place after 12 residents died during hurricane season last year from one facility whose air conditioning stopped working when the power went out. Bill Passes Allowing Cameras In Nursing Home Rooms

One state has passed a bill allowing “granny cams” to be used in nursing homes under certain conditions. One condition requires the family to notify the nursing home that they are installing a video camera in the residence room. The other condition requires that the family of the love one in the nursing home get consent from any roommates that would also be recorded by the “granny cam”.

Three individuals have been charged with nursing home theft. One of the individuals was a nursing home employee who stole a credit card from a nursing home patient. The nursing home employee shared the credit card with others who then purchased items on the card.Items charged to the credit card amounted to more than $160, with an additional attempt to purchase items costing more than $800.
