A bill requiring a nursing assistant quota for patients in one state has passed the state Assembly and now only requires the governor’s final approval. The Senate passed the bill a month prior. The bill requires nursing homes to staff one nursing aid for every 8 patients on the day shift, one nursing aid for every 10 patients on the evening shift, and one nursing aid for every 16 patients on the night shift.
“Seniors and their loved ones deserve the comfort of knowing that there is a sufficient level of staff to tend to their needs,” said one of the bill’s sponsors. “Hopefully this will minimize the chance for neglect and improve the overall quality of life for aging residents.” The bill currently is only on the horizon to be effective in one state.
