Legislators failed to back a bill with the goal of increasing the penalty for nursing home abuse and neglect. Nursing homes currently have a maximum fine imposed by the state to create a ceiling on the penalty of their actions or non-actions in regards to patient care. Elder care advocates worked to increase the fines to bring greater repercussions to nursing homes in violations of state healthcare standards.
Despite the failure to pass the bill, elder care advocates will try again in the future. There is still a belief that nursing home facilities allowing abuse and neglect of patients should have greater penalties. For more, read the story.
