Concerns from a patient death on a dementia unit are pointing to two issues that some see as a “recipe for disaster”. The facility that allowed a patient to be beaten by another patient causing a broken neck, several broken ribs, a broken nose, facial fractures and a collapsed lung in the incident, according to police, has raised concerns over staffing and the admission of high risk patients from the hospital.
“Something like this was bound to happen,” said the vice president of the local staffing union. “The staffing situation at the facilities has been in crisis for a long time.” This is evidence by filings to the state health department to decrease staff and continue to admit high risk patients. This is on top of the issue of the facility receiving a low rating by federal and state standards. For more, read the story.
