A nursing home has been accused of using a “sham medical director” to help with a kickback scheme to put more money in the pockets of the owners and executives managing the facility. The physician was an orthopedic surgeon who ordered post-surgical therapy for Medicare reimbursements even when the therapy was unnecessary. The facility owners, executive, administrator and physician have agreed to pay millions of dollars to settle the matter.
“Disguising intricate kickback arrangements through directorships and other misrepresented positions corrupts physician decision making and undermines the public’s trust in the healthcare system,” said the investigator general on the case. For more, read the story.
