Drug abuse and theft have risen in one state involving nursing home patients. Nursing home workers account for one fifth of the theft of drugs from nursing home patients in one state. To combat the growing problem, nursing home facilities are enacting stricter tracking mechanisms for their patients’ medications or installing surveillance cameras to monitor the movement of prescription drugs.
“Drug diversion and prescription abuse is a growing area of concern nationally and in Minnesota,” a state health commissioner said in a statement. “We want patients to be aware of the possibility of drug theft, we want workers to know it will not be tolerated, and we want providers to help prevent it by using best medicine management and tracking practices.” For more, read the story.
