A nursing home with a four-star rating has received numerous lawsuits over the years. The Medicare & Medicaid 5-star rating system has missed the individual problems that have left patients in dangerous situations due to neglect and/or abuse. One of the patients that experienced neglect was a patient smoking in his room with an oxygen tank. The tank caught on fire and he was burned in the face, wheeling himself into the hallway for help, all while a nurse sat at the nurse’s station sipping on her drink. The incident was caught on video with no opportunity to deny the events.
Another patient experienced neglect and abuse in the form of bed sores, bruises, bug bites and gangrenous feet. She also lost 60 pounds due to malnutrition. She died at the age of 36 shortly after she left the facility. For more, read the story.
