Nursing homes are showing a high rate of infection with 74 percent of facilities noted to have violations for lack of infection control. The facilities have repeat disciplinary action, but rarely to the point of being fined. Fixing the issue would require higher staffing rates though and a more robust plan to reduce the rate of infection.
“You’ve got this influx of vulnerable patients, but the staffing models are still geared more to the traditional long-stay resident,” said a physician representing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s medical epidemiologist for long-term care. “The kind of care is so much more complicated that facilities need to consider higher staffing.” For more, read the story.
