Nursing Home Owner Fined For Stolen Cell Phone

The former owner of a nursing home facility has been fined $650,000 due to the liability of a stolen phone. The phone contained records of more than 400 patients. The Office of Civil Rights cited that the records stored on the phone was a violation of security rules related to records.

“The issue of mobile devices has been a consistent theme in both recent OCR enforcement and public statements, and everyone in the HIPAA circle of enforcement should be paying close attention to mobile device security practices,” said the attorney on the case. For more, read the story.
