Nursing Home Patient Dies Of Suffocation

A nursing home facility is under investigation after a patient was allowed to suffocate to death. The patient's head became trapped between a mattress and bedrail.  Upon examination the patient was found to have fresh bruising on her neck. The state health department investigated and recommended a fine and plan of correction.

The nursing home “had no policy, procedure or system to ensure the proper sizing of mattresses, the fit of the grab bars [or the proper] space between the mattresses and the grab bar device to reduce the risk of entrapment,” according to a state Health Department report released last week.
