Nursing Home Patient Wanders From Facility, Freezes To Death

A nursing home patient suffering from dementia has died after wandering from the facility in freezing temperatures. The patient was found dead in the courtyard just 30 feet from the door. The patient had been allowed to wander from the facility when her device did not set off the alarm. She had earlier wandered from the facility twice saying she was going “home”.

Upon examination it was determined that the patient was dead within 1 to 2 hours of wandering from the building. State surveyors interviewed nurse aides to reveal that they documented safety checks for patients, but did not actually perform the checks. The nursing staff is no longer employed at the facility.
