One nursing home facility has been fined $100,000 for the highest class of violation that can be received from a state survey. The citation was given to the facility based on the failure to properly care for a patient that led to his death. The patient had a history of head trauma and difficulties with chewing and swallowing. The patient choked on a piece of meat and was taken to the hospital where he suffered a seizure and a lack of oxygen to the brain, dying just one week later.
According to a statement released by the state department, “The Class AA citation is ‘the most severe penalty under state law’ and was issued after state investigators ‘found deficiencies that were determined to have been a direct … cause of death of a patient or resident.” The citation was noted as a failure “to provide a safe dining experience and failed to implement their care plan to consistently assist and assure that safe eating occurred”.
