A scabies outbreak at a nursing home has left dozens with rashes from the human itch mites. Scabies is a communicable disease that passes through contact and other items that come in contact with the mites, such as bed sheets and clothing. The facility is currently closed to all new residents and outside visitors. It is also being sanitized through a thorough cleaning process to prevent further spread of the mites.
The state health department was brought in to investigate and the administrator is cooperating. “I think the families and the staff would really appreciate knowing that a thorough review was done and that there was accountability to anyone or anything that needs to be addressed,” he said. “Not only is it fair to them, but it's also necessary for us.” For more, read the story.
